In Þingvellir National Park, you will see the separation point between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Welcome to the Capital of the North. Akureyri is the second-largest town in Iceland, and an extremely pleasant location to re-enter civilization before continuing west. As you approach Akureyri, you don’t want to miss Goðafoss (The Waterfall of the Gods). It may be smaller than Dettifoss, but it is just as awe-inspiring.

Further along the road, you can visit Glaumbær Museum, where the peat-roofed farmhouses invite you to step back in time to Iceland’s more rural past. Also in this region, we will send you to a lesser-known waterfall, which has another surprise in store...

Day 7

From the bubbling hot spring Deildartunguhver to the twin waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar, where the porous lava rock oxidizes the glacial water as it churns into electric blue rapids.

If you want to take it easy on the last day, the Glanni waterfall is right along the route. Here you can also take a walk around the Grábrók crater before finally returning to the capital. In Reykjavík, you can end your vacation with a visit to one of the many excellent restaurants.
