If you are looking for an exciting, adventurous but educational destination for your school trip, then Iceland should be on top of your list! This volcanic island offers so much geological diversity, from volcanism and geothermal activity to the majestic glaciers and fascinating rock formations. The island is, with its 20 million years, very young, geologically speaking. In Thingvellir National Park and several other places around Iceland, you will be able to see the rift between the continental plates exposed at the surface – a unique sight.
Besides being a true gem for educational purposes, your group will also love it for its sheer natural beauty and the quirkiness of the capital city, Reykjavík. Being the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík offers everything that a modern city should offer, despite counting only roundabout 130,000 inhabitants. You can choose from a plethora of over 60 museums and galleries, with immersive choices like the National Museum or the Árbaer Open Air Museum, which displays more than 20 historical buildings. The colourful streets of the old downtown invite you for a stroll, and you can enjoy amazing views from the top of Hallgrímskirkja church. The capital also offers something for your taste buds, with delicious restaurants on almost every corner.
There are multiple hot spots to discover Icelandic history as well, for example at Thingvellir National Park, which was the birthplace of Iceland’s first parliament in 930. The former monastery Skálholt in the South lets you dive into medieval times, with a cathedral and several archaeological findings on display. You can also see the house where Reagan and Gorbachov decided on the end of the Cold War in Reykjavík!
