Optional Activities: Snorkeling
The second day of your trip takes you across the southern territory of the island, commonly known as the Golden Circle. We first stop at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of great political and geographical importance. This is where Alþingi, Iceland’s first democratic parliament, was founded in 930. When it comes to natural treasures, Þingvellir is one of the very few places in the world where you can see with your bare eyes the Mid-Atlantic ridge above ground. You’ll also have the possibility to take a scenic snorkeling tour that’ll open the gates to Silfra’s hypnotizing underworld and float in between the North Atlantic and Eurasian tectonic plates. Talk about being in between two continents, quite literally! A key element worth mentioning is that scenes from HBO’s “Game of Thrones” were also filmed here, particularly in the Almannagjá gorge, known to have a dark and ambiguous past. This backdrop served as the path to the “Eyrie” as well as significant sequences between Arya, The Hound and Lady Brienne of Tarth.
We then make our way to Friðheimar tomato farm for lunch, where we try some of their renowned homemade tomato soup and freshly baked bread. If you’re feeling frisky, you might even opt for a Bloody Mary too!
After lunch, we take you to the geothermal area Haukadalur, home to Geysir and its more famous brother Strokkur, where you’ll get a chance to witness boiling water being dramatically ejected from the deep beneath the ground to heights of 40 meters and above every 5-10 minutes. Shortly after, we head to Gullfoss, a spectacular two-tiered waterfall nestled in the heart of the Hvítá river canyon.
You’ll then head towards your accommodation and enjoy the rest of the evening with your newly found friends, share stories from the day and crack open a beer or two.
Optional Activities: Glacier Hiking
Today, you’ll slowly but surely make your way towards the country’s southern coastline, an explorer’s gold mine when it comes to the vast diversity of sightseeing and activity opportunities. You'll head towards two of Iceland’s most popular waterfalls – Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, both of which have featured frequently in movies such as “Thor: The Dark World”, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” as well as popular shows such as “Game of Thrones” “Vikings” and more recently “Star Trek: Discovery”
We take a shuttle that whisks us directly to the crash site of the DC-3 Plane Wreck passing by dramatic black beach landscapes as far as your eye can see just before continuing our journey towards Sólheimajökull glacier. Once there, you can opt to take it easy and admire the sights of this ever-changing natural backdrop from a distance or, if you’re feeling adventurous, why not strap on those crampons and set off on a guided glacier walk? We will stop at a couple more interesting film locations before fully unwinding at a cozy handpicked hotel nearby.
Optional Activities: Ice Caving, Jökulsárlón Boat Tour
Day 4 starts off by exploring Vík, the country’s most southerly village, characterized by its memorable church overlooking the town from the nearby hill. A short drive takes you to Mýrdalssandur – a scenic outwash plain in between two rivers, both of which carry glacial waters from deep within Mýrdalsjökull to the sea. You might recognize this area as the planet Lah’mu, the home of Jyn Erso, and the opening scenes of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
You then continue your journey towards Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, but not before stopping at Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Here, you’re more than welcome to roam around and explore the parks’ extensive hiking trails or perhaps join a guided Blue Ice Cave tour. You then take a short drive down Route 1 towards the eastern part of the island and discover the glorious otherworldly sights of Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, slowly unraveling in front of your eyes. Its undeniable impact of this place has made this location a bit of a hotspot, in movies such as “Batman Begins”, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and two James Bond movies, “Die Another Day” and “A View to a Kill”. You can opt to take a Glacier Lagoon Boat Tour to see the glacier from up close or simply enjoy it from the shoreline. A few minutes’ walk from the glacier lagoon takes you to the Diamond Beach – a stretch of beautifully colored black sanded coastline from where you can admire pieces of ice broken off from the lagoon harmoniously drifting away in the Atlantic Ocean’s horizon. We’ll then head towards our accommodation and take it easy for the remainder of the evening.
Can you believe we’ve made it halfway through the trip already! We’ll mark this day by heading out towards Hjörleifshöfði, a 220-meter cave that Star Wars fans may recognize from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Ironically enough, this is also referred to as the “Yoda Cave” due to the opening’s resemblance to our favorite little, green Jedi. We’ll slowly head towards the charming area of Stokksnes peninsula where dramatic peaks intertwine with desolate black shorelines, creating a truly ghostly yet breath-taking setting. The Viking Village, which is effortlessly nestled at the foot of Vestrahorn, one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains, is a must-visit when you’re in the area. The village is actually an abandoned film set from a movie that was never made. After spending some quality time enjoying the fairy tale ambiance, you’ll be whisked away and brought to the picturesque little fishing town of Djúpivogur, where you will be free to roam and explore the surrounding area.
Your day ends in the village of Egilsstaðir, where you will have a chance to relax and spend the night in a hotel nearby.
Perhaps you remember the scene from “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” where Walter gets on a long board and skates for, well what seems like, an eternity. If you do, you’ll be thrilled to learn that Seyðisfjörður, the location in which this scene takes place, is next in line on your itinerary. After soaking in the charm of this calm yet colorful town, you continue your journey towards the Northern territories of the island and lake Mývatn, Iceland’s 4th largest lake featured in “The Fate of the Furious”. This area offers endless sights and smells to those who visit, with sulfuric mud pots expulsing distinct scents that will be remembered far beyond the end of your Icelandic adventure. Take a sneak peek into Grjótagjá cave - a “Games of Thrones” hotspot for the infamous love scene between Jon Snow and the wildling Ygritte. You will be ending your evening fully immersed in the warm and calming waters of Mývatn Nature Baths.
Optional Activities: Whale Watching, GeoSea Baths
Ready to get back to civilization? This morning you’ll make your way to Akureyri - Iceland’s gateway of the North, filled with attractive wine and dine options, young vibrant nightlife, and exciting little local gems literally at your fingertips. On your way there, you’ll pass by Goðafoss waterfall and Dettifoss waterfall, whose influential waters grace Prometheus’s opening scene on the big screen. A little drive further up the road takes you to Húsavík, Iceland’s whale watching capital, where you can opt to join a boat tour and see these magnificent water creatures from up close. Húsavík has been enjoying the limelight recently, as it was heavily featured in the Netflix movie “Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga” and the home of our Icelandic singing heroes. The Song “Húsavik: My Hometown” may have narrowly missed the Oscar win, but if you keep your ears open, you may hear “Jaja Ding Dong” playing somewhere. We also recommend taking a dip in the stunning infinity pool at GeoSea.
Optional Activities: Vatnshellir Caving
Today, you’ll dive deep into the Wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often labeled ‘Iceland in Miniature’, this western coastline region gives you a taste of the country’s finest natural wonders, set just a stone's throw away from each other. Go back in time and explore the quiet fisherman’s town of Stykkishólmur, overlooking Breiðafjörður bay in the distance. Marvel at the dramatic seascapes and overhanging cliff sceneries. You’ll also get a chance to stop at Kirkjufell – one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains. This already famous mountain has become even more well-known thanks to it featuring as “The Arrowhead Mountain” in Game of Thrones season 6 and 7 and the epic battle between the wildlings and the White Walkers. You will then head to Borgarfjörður where you can slowly unwind and call it a day.
The last full day of this trip is sure to be a memorable one! You make your way towards Reykjanes Peninsula, a full of life small headland in the southwestern part of the country. The peninsula’s unique landscape has featured in movies such as “Noah” and standing in for the beaches of Iwo Jima on “Flags of Our Fathers”, as well as standing in as an alien planet where the team crash lands in the latest season of “Star Trek: Discovery” You’ll drive past the geothermal wonders of Krýsuvík and rugged moonlike formations before heading towards Iceland’s most talked about hotspot – the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption! Here you’ll truly get a chance to come up close and personal with nature’s explosive personality – quite literally! Kick your boots off, enjoy a cup of tea and admire the country’s biggest ever-changing fire pit from only a couple of hundred meters away. Afterward, you will head straight back to the city for some well-deserved downtime. As this is your last night together, make the most of your company and enjoy a final farewell dinner as one.
Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon, Guided City Tour, Food Tour, Whale Watching, FlyOver Iceland
Today, unfortunately, we have to say goodbye, but hopefully not for long!
