Itinerary

Day 1

Accommodation: Reykjavík

Driving Distance: approx. 50 km

Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon, Guided City Tour, Food Tour, Whale Watching, FlyOver Iceland

You arrive in Iceland and find your vehicle will be waiting for you. Reykjavík is only a short hop from the airport, where you can check into your hotel and then explore the most northern capital city in the world. Hip and happening, you will not struggle to find something to see and do in this vibrant town.

Day 2

Highlights:

Reykjanes Peninsula & Volcano Fagradalsfjall

Summary:

Accommodation: Hvolsvöllur

Driving Distance: approx. 185 km

Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon

Today, you head out to the Reykjanes peninsula, home to five volcanic systems and also Iceland’s most recent attraction – the live, erupting volcano in Geldingadalur.

Opportunities like this don't come up often, so don't let this slip by. Be amazed by the glowing lava that shoots into the air and listen to the crackling of the cooled lava flows!

The Reykjanes peninsula also has a lot to offer, such as bubbling geothermal areas and rugged Atlantic coasts. Optionally, you can enjoy a swim in the famous Blue Lagoon after the hike, before you drive to your accommodation along the South Coast.

Day 3

Highlights:

Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss Waterfalls
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Vík Village
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (optional)

Summary:

Accommodation: Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Driving Distance: approx. 155 km (398 km if driving to Jökulsárlón)

Optional Activities: Glacier Hiking, Kayaking, ATV Tour, Jökulsárlón Boat Tour

Iceland’s South Coast is extremely popular, and it is not difficult to see why that is. The waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are two of the biggest attractions, and if they weren’t enough to make your jaw drop, the black sand beach of Reynisfjara will be sure to do the job. There is a lot to discover here, and you can take all the time in the world!

Alternatively, you can opt for a longer drive and a tour to the world-famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here you can see fascinatingly colored icebergs and maybe seals in the lagoon. This is sure to be an unforgettable day.

Day 4

Highlights:

Geysir & Strokkur
Gullfoss Waterfall

Summary:

Accommodation: Golden Circle

Driving Distance: approx. 225 km

Optional Activities: Ice Caving, Snowmobiling, Secret Lagoon

Today's day can be made flexible: Either you take your time and explore the sights of the South that you neglected yesterday on the way to Jökulsárlón, or you head straight for the Golden Circle.

The Gullfoss waterfall is arguably the most famous waterfall in Iceland, it is breathtaking, and its two steps glisten in the sun. This is followed by the incredible Strokkur geyser, whose boiling water shoots up to 40 meters into the air from the depths of the earth. The accommodation is located in the area of the Golden Circle, which gives you time to explore here tomorrow.

Day 5

Highlights:

Þingvellir National Park
Glymur Waterfall (optional)

Summary:

Accommodation: Borgarnes

Driving Distance: approx. 190 km

Optional Activities: Snorkeling

As you head towards the west of Iceland, you can visit another of Iceland’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, Þingvellir National Park. This is one of the most geologically and politically significant sites in Iceland, as this is where the oldest existing parliament was founded (Alþingi).

If you have already marveled at Geysir and Gullfoss the day before, you can optionally take a hike to the second-highest waterfall in Iceland, Glymur, on the drive to your accommodation in Borgarnes.

Day 6

Highlights:

Deildartunguhver Hot Spring
Hraunfossar & Barnafoss Waterfalls

Summary:

Accommodation: Reykjavík

Driving Distance: approx. 160-180 km

Optional Activities: Krauma Baths, Into the Glacier, Húsafell Canyon Baths, Víðgelmir Caving

Today you go to the beautiful Borgarfjörður region, where you can marvel at hot springs, historical sites, and magical waterfalls. Reykholt is home to the ancient hot pot of the poet and scholar Snorri Sturluson, but you too have the chance to take a bath: The Krauma geothermal bath is ideal for a break from sightseeing.

Deeper inland, the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss lava waterfalls are waiting for you. Hraunfossar is like no other waterfall in Iceland and ripples very flat from an elongated lava field, laterally, into a glacier river. At the end of the day, you return to Reykjavík and can enjoy the last evening in the lively city center.

Day 7

Highlights:

Capital Reykjavík

Summary:

Driving Distance: approx. 50 km

Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon, Guided City Tour, Food Tour, Whale Watching, FlyOver Iceland

Today, you have another chance to explore the city, or simply do whatever you feel to make the most of your last day in Iceland, before heading home.
