Let the adventure begin! On your arrival, you will easily be able to pick up your vehicle and drive through the lava fields to reach your accommodation in the capital city of Reykjavík. Depending on the time of your arrival, you could use the opportunity to take a dip in the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon, or even head straight towards the very active volcano, Fagradalsfjall in Geldingadalur.
Your first evening will be spent in the vibrant city of Reykjavík, where you can discover this charming little capital, made up of colorful houses, museums, street art, and not to mention many places to have a fun night out. The park Elliðaárdalur also offers the opportunity to marvel at a pretty waterfall, already today!
Driving Distance: approx. 215 km
Optional Activities: Snorkeling, Laugarvatn Fontana, Secret Lagoon
It's time to explore Iceland’s most famous region - the Golden Circle! Today, you will discover some of the island's most treasured locations, and all compacted in such a small area.
In Þingvellir National Park, you will see the separation point between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. From there you can head on to visit Geysir, and the impressive Strokkur, which fires 100 degrees Celsius, sulfur-rich water up to 40 meters into the air. You will visit Gullfoss waterfall, the jewel in the crown of the Golden Circle. That’s not all, the waterfalls of Brúarfoss and Faxi are, whilst lesser-known, pretty special spots in this already incredible area.
There is much more to see and do in this region: Discover a variety of secret places, have delicious lunch in a famous and award-winning tomato greenhouse, or stretch your legs in the geothermal waters of the Secret Lagoon.
Accommodation: Vatnajökull area
Driving Distance: approx. 225 km
Optional Activities: Glacier Hiking, Jökulsárlón Boat Tour
On the third day, you start a tour along the beautiful South Coast. Here the waterfalls are lined up, and besides Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and Svartifoss, we also recommend a few lesser-known options.
Waterfalls are by far not everything on this day: The black sand beach of Reynisfjara is ideal for an unforgettable walk, and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is sure to be one of the highlights of your trip. In the nature reserve Skaftafell you can enjoy lush nature in an otherwise desert-like glacier landscape. You will spend the night in the Vatnajökull region, the perfect base for tomorrow's explorations!
Driving Distance: approx. 310 km
Optional Activities: Vök Baths
Day 4 sends you on a scenic drive through winding fjords, along deep blue Atlantic coasts. If the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Svartifoss waterfall are still along the way, today you have the opportunity to start directly with your exploration there. Otherwise, the trip begins with a visit to the famous Vestrahorn mountain range, where you can take photos that will make your buddies at home envious!
The route takes you through idyllic fishing villages and finally to Iceland's largest forest area, Hallormsstaður, where the unique Hengifoss waterfall awaits you. The extraordinary sight is formed by lines of red clay between the rock layers, in front of which the water jet rushes more than 100 meters into the depth. After this impressive experience, you will spend the night at the largest city in the Eastfjords, Egilsstaðir.
Driving Distance: approx. 265 km
Optional Activities: Mývatn Nature Baths, Whale Watching
Now that you have seen what the South of Iceland has to offer, it is time to see what treasures await in the North. The Diamond Circle brings together the most incredible locations in North Iceland, from Ásbyrgi canyon to the beautiful, sprawling lake of Mývatn.
Apart from the Eurovision film, Húsavík is best known as the whale watching capital of Europe, and here you have the unique chance to observe the gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Do you wonder what waterfall it will be today? The most powerful in Europe – Dettifoss – will leave you speechless. Up to 193 cubic meters per second rush into the depths, which provided a breathtaking backdrop for films like Prometheus. You spend the night in the area of the beautiful and popular Lake Mývatn, where the milky blue natural pools invite you to relax.
Driving Distance: approx. 190 km
Optional Activities: Horseback Riding, Whale Watching
Welcome to the Capital of the North. Akureyri is the second-largest town in Iceland, and an extremely pleasant location to re-enter civilization before continuing west. As you approach Akureyri, you don’t want to miss Goðafoss (The Waterfall of the Gods). It may be smaller than Dettifoss, but it is just as awe-inspiring.
Further along the road, you can visit Glaumbær Museum, where the peat-roofed farmhouses invite you to step back in time to Iceland’s more rural past. Also in this region, we will send you to a lesser-known waterfall, which has another surprise in store...
Driving Distance: approx. 350 km
Optional Activities: Víðgelmir Caving
Today, the road takes you back to Reykjavík through the West of Iceland. This area, rich in history and natural diversity, has many exciting locations to visit. From descending into the bowels of the earth in Víðgelmir cave to the twin waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar, where the porous lava rock oxidizes the glacial water as it churns into electric blue rapids.
If you want to take it easy on the last day, the Glanni waterfall is right along the route. Here you can also take a walk around the Grábrók crater before finally returning to the capital. In Reykjavík, you can end your vacation with a visit to one of the many excellent restaurants.
Driving Distance: approx. 50 km
Optional Activities: Blue Lagoon
Whilst your adventure may be over, we know you will have made memories to last a lifetime. You will drop off your rental car at the airport and, depending on your flight time, you can use this last opportunity to visit the famous Blue Lagoon, making this final day even more special!
